- Succulent-like in nature, the string of hearts prefer periods of drought between waterings. When the soil is dry 2/3 of the way down in the pot, then the plant is ready for a drink. In the winter months it’s best to allow the soil to dry completely through the pot as these plants go into a dormancy. They are sensitive to root rot and overwatering, so when in doubt let it drought.
